As we continue our series on Tom Rickerby’s expert insights from the ClearCalcs Webinar, we take a closer look at specifying LVL correctly by following these key rules.
When specifying LVL, always be clear and precise. Don’t just write "E13 LVL"; ensure you also specify the strength properties required for the project, or the properties you have used in your design calculations.
AS1720.1 Timber structures – Part 1: Design methods notes that there are no standard grades for LVL. That means although different manufacturers and suppliers may adopt the same average short term modulus of elasticity (“E value”), there is no way of knowing from the code what strength properties have been used unless the engineer nominates it.
LVL strength properties vary by manufacturer, so always double-check product data sheets to confirm suitability. LVL can significantly outperform traditional timber in both strength and stiffness, making it a highly reliable choice for structural applications.
